Why Stress and Trauma Make People Sick and Why Chiropractic Care May Help Due to Its Effect on the Prefrontal Cortex (2 CE ) FRIDAY 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM Sponsored by Haavik Research In this session, world renowned researcher Heidi Haavik, DC, will discuss the science about how stress and traumatic experiences negatively impacts our brain function and our health by causing most of the common chronic diseases of today. This session also covers the science that is showing us that spinal dysfunction negatively impacts brain function, and that chiropractic adjustments can reverse this. The fact that science is showing that chiropractic adjustments impact processing in the prefrontal cortex has major implications for how we may be impacting our patient’s health. This research literally is the “Chiropractor’s Dream,” because the prefrontal cortex is vital for one’s intelligence, movement control, pain processing, mental health, immune system, and inflammation (thus, most chronic diseases)! Dr. Haavik will explain all of this to you in an easy-to-understand language. She will share with you a summary of where we are today with the neurophysiological understanding of the impact of spinal function on brain function and will discuss what future implications this has for us as a profession. Biography
Heidi Haavik, DC, is a graduate of the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and earned a PhD in human neurophysiology from the University of Auckland. Dr. Haavik also is the director of Haavik Research Ltd., which educates practicing clinicians how to become better consumers of the relevant scientific literature. Dr. Haavik held an Adjunct Professor position at the University of Ontario, Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada, from 2017-2019 and was on the Research Council for the World Federation of Chiropractic from 2009-2018. Pain Reset – Chiropractic & Clinical Neuroscience for Solving Chronic Pain (2 CE ) FRIDAY 8:15 AM - 10:15 AM Sponsored by Carrick Institute This 2-hour workshop taught by Adam Harcourt, DC, professor of clinical neurology for the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies, has been designed to give participants insights into how understanding pain neuroscience, along with the application of clinical neuroscience in the chiropractic setting, can be used to solve chronic pain. The workshop will take participants on a journey starting with the “Gate Theory of Pain,” first devised in 1965 by Melzack and Wall, to the more modern encompassing “Neuromatrix” theory focusing on the central nervous system’s involvement in the human pain experience. Dr. Harcourt will guide you on this journey focusing on the elements of the nervous system that are involved in pain processing and how dysfunction in areas of the brain contributes to both altered biomechanics and the chronic pain experience. More importantly, Dr. Harcourt will emphasize the connection between your neurological observations and how they influence the type of treatment you would give your patient. biography
Dr. Adam Harcourt is the owner of Imagine X Functional Neurology, with an office located in York, PA. He is a Fellow of the American College of Functional Neurology (FACFN), Fellow of the American Board of Vestibular Rehabilitation (FABVR), Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (DACNB), 4th generation Doctor of Chiropractic, and is certified in Functional Neuro-Orthopedic Rehabilitation (FNOR). Dr. Harcourt is also dedicated to giving back and has served as Board President at Jodi House Brain Injury Support Center in Santa Barbara, CA, where he volunteered his time and expertise so that victims of traumatic brain injury have somewhere to be supported. Dr. Harcourt was born and raised in central Pennsylvania and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also completed a certificate in the Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. After exploring several different types of healthcare, he kept coming back to the 'treat the problem not the symptom' outlook. Dr. Harcourt completed his graduate work at Life Chiropractic College West, where he earned his Doctorate. He graduated Cum Laude, with honors, and received the highly-coveted Clinical Excellence Award for his graduating class. He then pursued three post-doctorate degrees in Functional Neurology and Vestibular Rehabilitation through the Carrick Institute. He presented his research on Multiple Sclerosis at the ACCRAC in 2014. Dr. Harcourt uses the latest research and techniques to improve the health and relieve pain and suffering for his patients. He takes the 'whole person' approach to your health, which means looking for the underlying causes of disease, discomfort, and pain, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. He is able to determine the root of the problem and create a personalized care plan to suit your individual needs. Dr. Harcourt and his wife are both dedicated to giving back to the community and supporting local charities and non-profits. |

Overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (2 CE) FRIDAY 1:15 PM - 3:15 PM Sponsored by NCMIC Join us for an introductory level overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presenting basic facts, including autism rates, signs, symptoms, conventional medical approaches, prognosis, and aspects of autistic culture. Speaker and autism expert Janet Lintala, DC, also will discuss the underlying health challenges, dysfunctions, and comorbid conditions of ASD. The program also will include an adult autism case from Dr. Lintala’s practice. Biography
With 50,000 children being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) each year, there is now a virtual “silent tsunami” of individuals with specific medical and chiropractic needs. In her workshop, Dr. Janet Lintala integrates the clinical experience of a biomedical autism practice with the first-hand experience only an autism parent can deliver. As an autism parent, she understands the complete confusion this diagnosis brings. As a doctor, she sees the holes, contradictions and even nonsense in the treatment approaches families are offered. Helping autism families cut through the confusion and apply effective treatments and therapies has become her passion. Dr. Lintala cuts through the “autism clutter” and provides a clear and logical plan. Using straightforward language, case studies, and specific strategies and protocols, Dr. Lintala gives clinicians the tools they need to take action and help their patient with ASD in ways that can show immediate results. Dr. Lintala received a B.S. in Genetics from The Ohio State University. She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from NUHS as salutatorian, summa cum laude, one month before the birth of her first son (among two) on the autism spectrum. She discovered that current medical and chiropractic knowledge did not offer her many tools to help her child at that time. Raising her sons has been an 18-year “residency” in Autism Spectrum Disorder and its related conditions. Dr. Lintala is the founder of The Autism Recovery Resource Center, serving patients in 10 states, and does extensive pro bono work at the center. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at NUHS, a speaker for Intersect4Kids, and has mentored with Elizabeth Mumper, M.D., former medical director of the Autism Research Institute. |
