Executive Director’s Message

There is nothing quite like seeing advocacy in action.

That was the case at the American Chiropractic Association’s National Chiropractic Leadership Conference (NCLC) on January 16-19 in Washington, DC. In addition to attending NCLC, the Texas Chiropractic Association participated in Capitol Hill visits. I was thrilled to be in our nation’s capital along with TCA President Dr. Devin Pettiet, Vice President Dr. Chad Carpenter, Legislative Affairs Chair Dr. Don White and TCA Past Presidents Tyce Hergert, Mike Martin and Dale White, Jr.

Team Texas was all over the Capitol, joining students from Parker University Student ACA (SACA) on visits with more than dozen Congressional offices. The purpose was to educate Senate and House members from Texas and their staff about chiropractic issues, not to mention identify champions for two of ACA’s key initiatives – Medicare and TRICARE.

ACA is seeking support for legislation to allow Medicare beneficiaries full access to current services chiropractors are allowed to provide under their state licensure. Meanwhile, two bills have been introduced – HR 344 and S.30 – to provide career military retirees in TRICARE with access to doctors of chiropractic and services to address pain management, musculoskeletal disorders and related ailments.

TCA’s doctors and Parker students did an awesome job explaining these two issues and even identified a potential co-sponsor or two. That’s what these visits are all about!

In addition to participating in Capitol visits and participating in ACA meetings, Team TCA attended the DC-ED Roundtable hosted by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (Chiro Congress). Drs. Pettiet and Carpenter educated other state associations about the battle for chiropractic in Texas, in addition to learning from our colleagues across the country. The Chiro Congress is a wonderful community and TCA is proud to be involved.

Now that NCLC is in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to turn our attention to TCA Legislative Day on Valentine’s Day, February 14, and the Texas Chiropractic Legislative Conference (TCLC) on February 15-16 in Austin. Still not registered yet? There’s still time.

What happens on TCA Legislative Day is critical to the future of chiropractic in the Lone Star State. We’re counting on Texas chiropractors to “Show Your Love for Chiropractic!” by joining us in Austin. You’ll be assigned to visits at the State Capitol with your state legislators, with the goal to get support for TCA’s pro-chiropractic bills. It’s serious work, but it’s also fun and rewarding. More than a few TCA members have told me it’s their favorite TCA event of the year. Find out for yourself … sign up for TCA Legislative Day by February 8.

We also encourage you to stick around for TCLC. The speakers and sessions are outstanding and the opportunity to hear the keynote session from inspirational speaker/chiropractic advocate Shilo Harris is worth the registration price alone. Get your CE hours – including the Orthopedic Diplomate and TBCE hours – and get involved in YOUR state association. Register online for TCLC today or call the TCA office at (512) 477-9292.

We realize politics isn’t for everybody, but it’s important for our voice to be heard. That’s the sole reason for TCA Legislative Day. We’re counting on you to be there and bring your fellow DCs, spouse, staff and patients with you.

See you in Austin next month!
