The word quality may be used in a variety of contexts. In the marketing of products or services, we use the word to indicate a degree of excellence and perhaps to imply superiority in kind. 

The Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners is responsible for enforcing standards of practice, so I feel compelled to promote quality of service as a means of elevating the profession to meeting and exceeding these standards. 

How can one improve quality? Here are three steps you can take to put you on the right path:

  1. Make a commitment. Maintain “constancy of purpose” and reinforce this concept regularly so that you and your staff will never trade quality for short-term profits. 
  2. Track mistakes. Define exactly what “quality” is in your practice andimplement a system to gauge achievement such as with patient satisfaction questionnaires. 
  3. Invest in training. Take personal responsibility for training your staff so that they can become good stewards of your practice and meet your quality goals.

I recommend that you commit at least ten minutes of every weekly staff meeting to discuss standards of practice as outlined in the Board Rules. Start with Chapter 77 and then work through Chapter 78. Spend plenty of time discussing each individual rule. 

Remember that to achieve a reputation of quality, each staff member first must be aware and fully understand the standards which serve as the foundation of your practice.
