ACA Updates Their Brand

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has announced that they are moving in a whole new direction.  "We took a hard look at the often unhealthy ways we’ve related to each other and to the larger world of healthcare. Then we realized it was time to change our way of thinking, working and getting along. So, starting today, ACA is moving in a healthier direction."

"The world is changing quickly, says the ACA, "And we need to change with it."

Sherman College of Chiropractic 14th Annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium

Sherman College of Chiropractic will host the 14th Annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS), a peer-reviewed conference on vertebral subluxation research and the philosophy of chiropractic, in Spartanburg, SC, October 7-8, 2017. 

Up to 12 hours of continuing education credit are available. The goal of IRAPS is to bring together leaders in philosophy and research as well as practitioners who are centered on the vertebral subluxation practice, to build a stronger academic community worldwide regarding the subluxation model of chiropractic.

Life University Run The Lights Of Life Event, December 2, 2017

Start a new holiday tradition, or return this year, and Run the Lights of LIFE. The 5K run starts at 5:00 p.m., just before sunset, and takes in the beautiful campus of Life University during their annual holiday light show. 

After the run, stay and enjoy the holiday festivities, with caroling, s’mores and hot cocoa, a holiday spirit contest, food and music, and much more, including the Lights of LIFE.

And this year, Life University is partnering with Make-A-Wish Georgia for the event with a goal to raise $10,000 to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening health conditions.

HHS: Hurricane Harvey & HIPAA Bulletin

“Severe disasters – such as Hurricane Harvey,” the HHS notes, “impose additional challenges on health care providers. Often questions arise about the ability of entities covered by the HIPAA regulations to share information, including with friends and family, public health officials, and emergency personnel.”  In the wake of Hurricane Harvey the HHS has released a Bulletin reviewing HIPAA regulations. Read the full bulletin for complete details. 

The bulletin notes that the HIPAA Privacy Rule allows patient information to be shared to assist in disaster relief efforts, and to assist patients in receiving the care they need.  While the HIPAA Privacy Rule is not suspended during a public health or other emergency, the Secretary of HHS may waive certain provisions of the Privacy Rule, and following the President’s declaration that a disaster exists in the States of Texas and Louisiana the Secretary has exercised the authority to waive sanctions and penalties against covered hospitals.

But even without a waiver specifically covering entities such as doctors of chiropractic, the HIPAA Privacy Rule always allows patient information to be shared for the following purposes and under the following conditions:

How to Help Those Affected by Hurricane Harvey

The Texas Chiropractic Association, Texas Chiropractic College and Parker University have teamed up to create a fund for Texan chiropractors who have been affected by the storm. Monetary and chiropractic equipment donations are being requested. Learn more about C.H.I.R.O.

ACA leadership requests that if you know of any member who has been seriously affected by the storm and subsequent flooding, please pass that information on to ACA Vice President Dr. Karen Konarski-Hart at Dr. Konarski-Hart, a trained disaster relief responder, offers this additional information for those who wish to help in some way:
