A Pivotal Time for Chiropractic in Texas

Now is a pivotal time for the chiropractic in profession in Texas! February 28 is the date for the hearing for the Texas Medical Association (TMA) vs. Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners (TBCE) and Texas Chiropractic Association (TCA) appeal. The Third District of Texas will hear oral arguments in the case, with representatives from TBCE and TCA representing the chiropractic side.

By now, every TCA member should know what’s at stake – your ability to diagnose and treat nerves and the subluxation complex. TMA, in its ongoing attack on chiropractic, is trying to strike TBCE Board rules that allow you to treat conditions as simple as sciatica.

Don’t take my word for it! Find out what this case really means and how it could impact the future of chiropractic in the Lone Star State.

TCA is offering two opportunities:

 1)      Listen to the third episode of TCA Talk, our regular podcast. Lead attorney Matt Wood of Weisbart Springer Hayes, LLC, which is representing TCA in this litigation, will provide in-depth analysis of the case, why you should care, the appeals process, what happens if we win or lose, and where do we go as a profession go from here.

 2)      Secondly, register for the next TCA Live Tele Town Hall Meeting, Is Chiropractic in Texas on the Chopping Block? – TMA vs. TBCE/TCA Appeal and What It Really Means, coming up at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday, February 22. Wood will be on the town hall along with myself, TCA Vice President Dr. Devin Pettiet as well as Kaden Norton and Josh Massingill of StateCraft, TCA’s lobbyists. Don’t miss it!

TCA believes in regular communication with our members. When you’re well-informed, we’re more effective as a profession. I encourage you to like the Texas Chiropractic Association Facebook page and visit it often, read your emails and pay attention for updates.

Protecting the profession through legal defense is just one of TCA’s jobs. We also represent you legislatively. While the next Texas Legislative Session doesn’t happen until 2019, Team TCA is already hard at work. TCA’s Legislative Affairs Committee, representatives from Parker University and Texas Chiropractic College and other volunteers met at TCC last month to craft a legislative agenda that we believe will propel the profession. It’s still early in the process and we’ll reach out to members and the chiropractic community for your input. What made the 2017 session so wildly successful was the team work on display and it will take more of the same to continue our positive momentum.

I also want to acknowledge all the chiropractors who stepped up to the plate during January’s CDI Month. A number of you made individual donations to the Chiropractic Development Initiative (CDI) and several of you accepted the 100 x $100 CDI Challenge by pledging $100/month. Thank you for your generosity and setting an example for your chiropractic colleagues. We’ll recognize members of the 100 x $100 club in the next issue of Texas Chiropractic eSource.

We hope to see you at next month’s Mid-Winter Conference in Lubbock or the first-ever Texas Sports Chiropractic Conference at TCC in April.

Until next month ….

Max Vige, DC
TCA President
