Although pregnant women indicated that they were willing to participate in a structured clinic-based exercise program, only a few actually showed up, researchers reported.  In a small study 52 women completed willingness-to-exercise surveys, and 27 of these pregnant women agreed to participate in a tutored Zumba aerobic dance program – but just three women showed up.

When the research team followed up as to what barriers prevented them from showing up the exercise classes:

  • 25.8% cited employment obligations
  • 16.1% cited child care responsibilities
  • 16.1% said they were unable to find a schedule for the exercise sessions
  • 9.7% said they were unable to exercise due to pregnancy complications
  • 6.4% said they had inadequate transportation to the clinic
